In the screenshot below you can see the basic’s of their Profile Manager. What this allows the business to do is create profiles that are installed on any iOS device that will control certain aspects of that device – such as Mail, Contacts, Calendars, VPN, etc. Once you install the profile on the device or Mac it asks the end user for simple things, such as their username, password, e-mail address, etc leaving out the more complex things such as incoming or outgoing mail server, ssl or not, port numbers, etc. What this allows for is easier and quicker deployments of devices on your network while allowing you to keep all the technical settings away from your end user.

With the Devices section it allows the control of the device at the lowest level possible, including installing App’s, remote wipe or lock, and general detailed information about the device. Any change made at the device level is automatically “Pushed” out to all devices in that group. Say for instance you have 400 iPad’s in the “wild” and you want them all to get a new app but they are all in different locations through the world. All your network admin would need to do is add it on the device group section and that app would automatically appear on their devices, once they were on a network. If the device gets lost or stolen you could remote lock or wipe the device and all information would be protected from anyone else seeing it.

As you can see this is just a brief overview of what Apple has built into Lion Server Profile Manager but configured the right way with profiles and devices your organization could easily manage any number of iOS devices with little overhead and from a controlled and secured location.
